Eco-Friendly Household Product Reviews

  • Biokleen Oxygen Bleach Plus
This comes in powdered form and even though you use relatively little, I find it powerful. Although I don't use it in every load, it certainly brigthens my whites and removes all residual smells. In paste form (mix with a little water) it works with even more intensity on fabric and carpet even. Love it!
  • Ecover Dishwashing Liquid
While the liquid is pleasing in texture and smell. Within less than a month, 1/3 of the bottle or more is gone. This product claims that " one squeeze" will clean a sink full of dishes, but the bottle top combined with the thinness of the fluid making a squeeze feel more like a 2 tablespoons. It is true there aren't as many bubbles. The container is recycbleable, but it is still plastic. Use with caution and care. Could be more effective and find value in a different container, but who wants to do that?

Eco-Friendly Personal Care Product Reviews

  • Avalon Organics Hand and Body Lotion
I chose the Lemon scent enriched with Beta Glucan. This product indicates that it is "safe, effective, pro-organic, no artifical color, synthetic fragrance or parabens" etc. The scent is overwhelming and deliciously lemony. It is light, almost too light for my moisture starved hands after a winter of abuse. Rating: Smell is heavenly, light, but not substantial.

Alyson - hope you're doing well! This snowstorm has thrown a wrench into my travel plans, so I haven't had much time to myself on the computer (apart from haggling with U.S. Airways). I do want to keep up with my food diary, though. So here it is.

12/18
Hot chocolate
Hot Thai soup with tofu
Roasted cauliflower
Banana
Oranges
Apples
Milk

Total: 1060

20 minutes on Stair Climber, 20 minutes weights

Didn't eat much today, but I felt fine. Could have been the cold weather froze my appetite :)

12/19
Oatmeal with brown sugar
Amy's burrito
Roasted cauliflower
Edamame
Banana muffin
Banana
Orange juice
Orange

Total: 1650

Ran 4 miles, 20 minutes weights

Felt fine yesterday. Was a bit hungry before I went to bed, but it wasn't distracting. Tomorrow we're supposed to fly to Salt Lake City, so I hope I won't be tempted by all the snack food I'm taking to keep my two year old quiet on the airplane.

Happy Holidays!

Alyson Jenkins

I hate that slump feeling, when you just arent feeling good and then eating bad things just makes it worse. Its just prepetuates the cycle. It just take 1 or 2 days of treating yourself to the good stuff, everthing fresh and healthy to turn it around. Its not ownder that junk food does really make us feel like junk. I hope you arent getting sick.Takecareof yourself, friend.

Martha Lurie

12/18
Coffee with cream
Chicken vegetable soup
A few soup crackers
2 stuffed mushrooms
5 cheese and crackers
2 spring rolls
2 cookies

I was feeling lousy today - sore throat and headache. I had my office holiday party and ate some app's and was in bed for the night at 7. I am in a slump with eating and I can easily blame feeeling sick and having holiday parties, but it's just me not caring about what I eat. I hope to get out of this slump in a day or two - maybe Monday??

Thanks, Martha!

Martha Lurie

12/17
coffe with cream
6oz light yogurt
1 cup grapenuts
fresh pineapple and strawberries
Amy's lentil vegetable soup
animal crackers/cookies

I have a terrible cold and sore throat, so I didn't eat much, but at least I didn't eat bad food.

Alyson - Good luck today and I will be thinking about you!

Cookbooks I Use

  • Jeff Cox: The Organic Cook's Bible: How to Select and Cook the Best Ingredients on the Market
This book isn't just about vegetables. It contains fruits, grains and dairy as well. I use it as a handy reference with the bonus of having great recipes. (***)
  • From the Editors of Cook's Illustrated: The Best 30 Minute Recipe
Again, I like to check out books from the library and there were a surprising number of recipes that I loved in this book, but not enough to buy another enormous recipe book. (****)
  • Jessica Seinfeld: Deceptively Delicious
I checked this book out from the library to try it out and I ended up using it so much, I had to go out and make the purchase! I like the addition of vegetable purees to her recipes, but I alter all of them to add more nutritional value. My kids eat this stuff!! (***)
  • Editors of Cooks Illustrated Magazine: Baking Illustrated: A Best Recipe Classic
This is one of the greatest baking cookbooks I have ever read. I love Cooks Ill. because they described WHY they chose their ingredients. (*****)
